Bronx dropped by a few times a week and helped me out with my little shop, which was becoming more than I could handle on my own. Every time, I’d tease him and flirt with him because I couldn’t resist, and he would flirt back, stirring my desire for him until I was dizzy with it. We’d laugh and joke, and Bronx would work dutifully in my little business. Sometimes, he’d drop by on my lunch break, and we’d just sit. We’d eat sandwiches and coffee and talk and laugh. It was, well, dating. I was happy, in a way I never thought would be possible for me, as damaged as I was.

Once the work was done and we were both tired, we’d exhaust ourselves in a different way. After, I’d come up with a reason why Bronx couldn’t stay with me. Every time, he’d press his lips together and nod, glaring at the ground as he prepared to leave. I’m so in love with you. I want to truly be your mate, and I don’t want to keep frustrating you. I just don’t know how to let you in, I’d think as I watched his muscled back and hulking shoulders as he walked out the door.

After about a month of Bronx both spending so much time with me and making intense, passionate love to me, I had to face the music.

I was having a baby.

Actually, judging by the changes already happening in my body, I was having two. Since shifter pregnancies only lasted five months, it would be obvious what Bronx and I had been getting up to soon. More obvious, I supposed, because the whole town seemed to be in on getting us together.

I held out for another couple of weeks, needing even more desperately to be closer to my mate since I was carrying his children, but I figured I was six weeks along. My belly was getting hard and curved, just enough for me to notice. It wouldn’t be much longer until I popped. Bronx was unassuming, but he wasn’t stupid. What would he do when he found out? Would he be the same Bronx I was coming to know, strong, protective, respectful, level-headed, loving? Or would he change now that I was “trapped?”

I never wanted to think of my babies as anything other than the gifts they were. Bronx is a wonderful alpha. My fated mate is the original gift. My traitorous brain, still fresh from my horrifying experience, wouldn’t let up with the paranoia, with the fear. You don’t know that. You’ve been down this road before. You thought you knew your alpha and look what happened. I was so confused. Maybe just a little time to think. A little time to wrap my head around becoming an O-Dad and being pregnant by my fated mate so soon. Everything felt right with Bronx, more right than it ever had, but I was still traumatized, and my experiences had left me afraid. What am I gonna do?

After the next time we made love, Bronx and I were squeezed into my tiny twin bed.
